Many thanks to all who came to see us in the Lucan Spa Hotel on September 2oth and 21st. The event was a great success.

There was a great turn out for Europe’s top print consultant John Charnock who presented 6 principles to a packed audience of Irish printing companies.

The new Develop 2060XL digital colour press with pin point accurate registration generated huge interest. Ryan Quinn of Ream Printers in Belfast was the winner of the €500 cash. The draw was open for all who took a demo of the 2060XL.

Our partners Walter Nash & Co. were kept busy with demos of their wide selection of finishing equipment over the 2 days.

Many of our visitors had time to chat our software developer Brendan Dooley and to take a good look at Digital PrePress. Developed by Brendan, Digital PrePress is the complete tool for personalisation, numbering and imposition that comes free with all our Presses. We are very proud that this software has been developed in Ireland and that it is now giving our clients a real edge over their competitors

Based in one of Ireland’s top tourist towns, Killarney, Murphy Print is surrounded by numerous hotels, restaurants, and commercial and visitor organisations that want immediate, top-quality service.

Located in Woodlands Industrial Estate, Park Road, it provides a comprehensive design and printing service – commercial printing, presentation folders, docket books, stationery/logo design, corporate identity, large-format displays, interior and exterior signage, etc.

Using digital printing means it can tailor print runs to suit customer’s immediate requirements while keeping costs low.

Barry Murphy says he “got the printing bug” and set up the company back in 1984. Customers are mostly based in Co Kerry but also further afield, and the company has a number of national and international contracts. He puts the emphasis on “service and quality”.

Three years ago, Murphy Print decided to close down its litho printing section and to concentrate on its digital process. “It’s a formula that works for us. For smaller jobs, litho doesn’t compare with digital, which is much quicker, and the quality is just as good if not better.”

“…a big leap up from our previous machine”

digitalprint.ie launched the new Develop +2060XL in March 2017 and delivered one of the first machines to Murphy Print. It had a Develop +1060L, the previous generation, also supplied by digitalprint.ie, but Barry says it was time to upgrade. “Volume has increased greatly – and with the new machine we could go into a different league. We’ve greatly increased our volume in just two months.”

“The Develop +2060XL is faster, has great range, from envelopes to banners. It’s quick and reliable, the quality is great, and the range of sizes is vast – from 90 x 148mm to 330 x 1,200mm. We can target new areas with the envelope printing, while registration with the electronic front and side lay ensures precise registration. The Develop +2060XL is a big leap up from the previous machine, and running costs are lower.”

Barry is highly satisfied with digitalprint.ie’s support and service. “It’s the second machine we have installed from digitalprint.ie. They’re really good, very responsive, very professional. Their staff know their stuff and promptly sort out any problems that arise.”

digitalprint.ie is pleased to announce that we’ve moved into new premises in Dublin – more than doubling our showroom, warehouse and office space.

Because of the continued success and strong growth of our business over the past few years, we needed to expand so that we can continue to deliver the very best service to our growing customer base.

The showroom in our new 6,000 square foot premises at 136C Slaney Close, Dublin Industrial Estate, Dublin 11, is now open and the new Develop +2060 PRESS is available to view.

All warehousing and dispatch of supplies has been moved and is already taking place from the new central warehouse at our Dublin premises.

The print industry is changing rapidly. The latest research now suggests that litho is less than 50% of the total market. By contrast, the market for digital print and value add services is growing at an exponential rate. Plenty of new and highly profitable opportunities are emerging.

The total digital printing market will reach 225% of the 2013 value by 2024, according to a report by Smithers Pira, The Future of Digital Printing to 2024.

As Ireland’s leading supplier of digital printing equipment, we have the expertise and solutions to help you identify and exploit the latest high profit opportunities in the print industry. We look forward to continuing to partner with key players in the Irish print & graphics industries, as we both reap the benefits into 2017 and beyond.

Tony Mullen of Mullen Print Ltd knows the print industry inside-out, and has experience of both litho and digital.

His print house has a four-colour Komori litho press, acquired an OKI from digitalprint.ie about 10 years ago, then added two Xerox 250 digital presses.

More recently, a thorough series of demonstrations and tests impressed him that digital technology is now effectively on a par with litho, but also has advantages such as efficiency, no minimum orders and cost savings.

“I was impressed with the registration, almost identical to the litho. Previously there was some variance but the alignment is now as good as perfect.”

Early in 2016, therefore, he invested in a Develop +1060 digital colour press, which allows the company to carry out both small and medium-run jobs very cost-effectively.

“There’s been a dramatic improvement in the click-rates, the new digital machine is more efficient, we can do a greater volume, and we can be more competitive.”

‘Wow!’

“The quality is superb,’ says Tony. “One major customer who produces a magazine said ‘Wow!’ when he saw the digital printing. The quality was so good I was even surprised myself.

“One advantage is the turnaround time. If the magazine is sold out, more copies can be printed rapidly, which is not possible with litho.

“Short-run jobs have increased hugely, and we can do them now when it wasn’t possible before. We can run off 50, or even 10. This opens up a lot of new business.”

Tony says the registration is excellent, and “the colour matching is really good, much truer than it used to be. The calibration used to be a nightmare but now is also excellent. I was surprised myself by how much digital has improved. Compared with litho, there’s no difference in quality.”

The vacuum-fed input trays on the Develop +1060 are similar to the feeding on a litho press. The +1060 can print on a wider range of paper stocks, including litho paper stock, both coated and uncoated in a range of weights.

The Develop +1060 has an electronic front and side lay for pinpoint accurate sheet-to-sheet and back-up register, again mimicking a litho machine.

‘Perfect’

“With the vacuum trays, the registration is excellent on the digital – on both sides if necessary. The stock is held in position until both sides have been printed. We did a very good test with business cards, and the two sides were perfect.”

Another advantage is that “the digital machine is cleaner … litho is still messy.”

Tony says: “This is a new generation of digital machine.” The click-rate is good – and maintenance is included, he says, unlike with litho where you could get huge bills.

The low running cost of the Develop +1060 makes it economical to carry out a wider range of work. Mullen Print can take shorter-run work off the litho press and print digitally on the same paper stock, with no discernible difference in quality. The litho press can then be used for the longer-run, high-quantity work best suited to it

As regards digitalprint.ie, Tony says the support is excellent; “the engineers are well trained and know their stuff, and the response is rapid.”

The +1060 is already making a difference. “Doing the kind of jobs we always did is more profitable but we’re also getting more jobs – so we’re making more money.”
